"Science Saturdays" at Pond Gap Elementary. 2016
I think it is important to give back to your community. In general, nobody's success can be attributed solely to themselves. I know I've had a lot of mentors and guidance to achieve my current success. Thus, it is my duty to also assist the next generation of scientists. More importantly, the black and brown community is still disadvantaged in the sciences. I want to do what I can to fight against this bias, which is why most of my outreach is towards those in underrepresented groups.
Teaching:
Onaketa Tutor:
Through this non-profit program, I offer FREE one-on-one tutoring sessions for black and brown kids
I teach physics and math to middle and high schoolers
I have been a tutor since 2021
Developed a BiteScis:
Titled "Are we Alone" and was published in 2023
I collaborated with a teacher to develop a lesson plan geared towards early high schoolers
The lesson uses modern astronomy to cover classroom curriculum
Science Saturdays Volunteer:
On Saturdays, we taught STEM topics to elementary kids with hands-on projects
Hosted at Pond Gap, a majority minority elementary school
I taught from 2015 to 2017 (program stopped in 2019)
Science Communication:
Guest star on Finding Genius Podcast with Richard Jacobs:
Discussed my research and its relation to the science of the new James Webb Space Telescope
This was published in 2022
Wrote a New Scientist Article:
Titled "The hunt for extraterrestrial life is about to enter a new era" and was published in 2021
A short article on the advances astronomers have made towards finding extra-terrestrial life
Focused on audiences without a scientific background
Community Development:
Active APS-Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity Alliance (IDEA) member:
I was the only graduate student member of the communication and transparency subcommittee
It is aimed to reduce communication barriers from senior faculty and the general employees (students, post-docs, and scientist)
We improved the Harvard astronomy website and constructed more direct avenues for general employees to contribute to departmental decision-making
I was a member in the 2020-2021 academic year
First cohort of National Astronomy Consortium (NAC) outreach fellow:
NAC is a program designed to improve the diversity in STEM by increasing the number of students from underrepresented and underserved groups and those otherwise overlooked by the traditional academic pipeline into STEM or STEM-related fields
I helped provide the extended support that all NAC undergrads receive
I was the outreach fellow in the 2018-2019 academic year
Hands-on Volunteering:
Prison Education :
I am against the broken prison system in America. Especially, because I know black and brown people are unfairly targeted by this, leading to a perpetual state of lost potential and opportunities in my community. I want to help combat this, by providing people caught in the system more opportunities to learn.
I will work at the Education Learning Lab at the Colorado Department of Corrections, Denver Complex. There I will give assistance by providing inmates tutoring, guidance, and resources to help them achieve their academic goals. For the majority of inmates, this will be for their GED, however, this could also be for college credit or simply personal interest in their pursuit of knowledge and educational growth.
I have strategized with the Denver Complex Programs Captain and the Colorado Department of Corrections Faith & Citizen Programs Administrator about the program. Now my application is processing
Expected start date of early Spring 2025, after appropriate training
Harvard Observing Project (HOP) Volunteer:
Gives students and locals the opportunity to learn about astronomy by allowing them to make new, scientifically significant observations with the 0.4m Clay Telescope
I helped with operating the telescope, help with the data analysis, and described the science goals of observations we conducted
I was a volunteer from 2019 - 2022
Cambridge Explores the Universe Volunteer:
Outreach event aimed to highlight the wonders of astronomy to elementary kids in a fun and easily digestible way
Volunteered the years of 2018 and 2019
